Delivering Land Development with Standardized CAD and Design Support
The Client
The Client is a U.S. based engineering consulting firm specializing in land development, civil engineering design, and infrastructure support for commercial and residential projects. With a lean and highly experienced team, the firm delivers end-to-end engineering services, including site development planning, grading, drainage, and permitting support. Their operational model emphasizes efficiency, hands-on project involvement, and direct coordination with contractors and stakeholders across multiple concurrent projects.
The Challenge / Opportunity
The client engaged our team to provide complete land development and hydrological design support for a 2-acre commercial development site. However, the project presented multiple operational and technical challenges:- Limited Client Availability: With multiple projects and ongoing site responsibilities, the client had minimal bandwidth for regular inputs, reviews, or iterative feedback. This required our team to work proactively with limited direction.
- Lack of Standardized CAD Practices: Incoming drawings lacked consistency in layering, line weights, annotation styles, and naming conventions. This created inefficiencies and required the establishment of a uniform drafting framework.
- Fragmented Data Sources: Base drawings from multiple sources were inconsistent and required preprocessing and normalization before design work could begin.
- Compressed Timeline: Deliverables were needed quickly for permitting, leaving little room for revisions and requiring a precise, first-time-right approach.
Project Scope
| Grading and Drainage Design | Pre-Development Hydrological Analysis | Post-Development Hydrological Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Stormwater Management System Design | Storm Profiles and Utility Layouts | Erosion & Sediment Control Plans (E&S / ECP) |
Our Solution
1. Standardization & Data Cleanup
- Creating a project-specific CAD template.
- Defining layer conventions, sheet structures, and annotation standards.
- Cleaning and organizing all incoming drawings for a unified workflow.
2. Grading & Stormwater Management
- Grading Design: Optimized for proper site drainage and local regulatory alignment.
- System Development: Engineered conveyance layouts, pipe sizing, and inlet/outlet placement.
- Hydraulic Analysis: Conducted HGL analysis, slope validation, and hydrological assessments to manage pre- and post-development runoff.
3. Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC)
- Developed strategies aligned with NPDES requirements.
- Implemented phased measures for pre-, during-, and post-construction.
- Integrated silt fences, sediment basins, and inlet protection.
4. Execution & Quality Assurance
- Permit-Ready Deliverables: Produced a fully coordinated set of plans, profiles, and construction details.
- Internal QA/QC: Conducted rigorous internal reviews to ensure high-quality output with minimal revisions.
How Our Solution Created Value
Our approach went beyond simply delivering the project—it created tangible, long-term value for the client. Despite limited input and constrained availability, we successfully delivered a complete land development design package while providing ongoing design support, significantly reducing the client’s reliance on internal bandwidth. By introducing structured CAD standards and streamlined workflows, we not only addressed immediate inefficiencies but also equipped the client with a repeatable framework for future projects, improving overall operational maturity. From a technical standpoint, our designs and continuous design support were aligned with regulatory requirements, resulting in clear, permit-ready documentation that minimized approval delays. Even within a compressed timeline and fragmented data environment, we maintained steady progress and eliminated common bottlenecks such as rework and coordination gaps. Most importantly, our proactive and solution-oriented approach built strong trust with the client. The quality of deliverables, responsiveness in design support, and speed of execution led to a highly positive engagement. This ultimately evolved into a six-month dedicated partnership, with our team functioning as a seamless extension of the client’s organization. This project highlights our ability to thrive in high-pressure environments where data is unstandardized and client bandwidth is limited. At Intrivis, we don’t just fill gaps—we become a seamless extension of your design team. Whether you are facing a compressed timeline, a lack of standardized workflows, or need high-level technical support to scale your firm, we provide the precision and autonomy required to succeed.
